Oakfield - Gone to The Dogs

Back in 2022, we introduced a new Goose Control measure at Oakfield with the use of dogs, aiming for a natural and humane approach. This led to the arrival of Pep and Angus, our dedicated Geese Dogs, along with their skilled handler, Paul. We're thrilled with the results, as we've seen significant improvements in keeping geese away from our course. Our goal was to implement a system that was both safe and natural, and it's working wonderfully.

Of course, it’s not just our members who enjoy the beauty of Oakfield. Geese have long been drawn to our lush, irrigated fairways, ponds, and water hazards. Oakfield has been a frequent resting spot for these birds. But thanks to Pep and Angus—two well-trained Border Collies who patrol the course weekly—our fairways have remained clear this year.

Trained dogs create a natural fear response in geese, who see them as predators. This encourages geese to leave the area without harming them, making it a more humane method than physical barriers or loud deterrents.

Geese tend to recognize and remember areas where they feel unsafe. Regular dog patrols have established the golf course as a location to avoid, making it less attractive to geese in the long term. It takes time for this to happen, and we needed a great deal of patience, but its been paying off! Its been an effective and eco-friendly way to maintain the course’s appeal and playability, enhancing the overall golf experience for members and visitors.

These dogs are a delight to have on site, and they’ve been trained to ensure they don't interrupt your round of golf. Back in April, Angus was awarded a Volunteer award with HRM, presented to him by Mayor Mike Savage for the work Paul has done with HRM.

Recently, Paul introduced Gaudreau, a 12-week-old Border Collie. Pep and Angus have been training him over the past few weeks, and it’s been a treat to watch him learn the ropes and keep our fairways goose-free. If you see him on the course, make sure to give him some encouragement.

If you want to learn more about this program, You should take the time to watch Paul's episode of "A Dogs Life" on Eastlink (linked below).

What would happen if you could take the skills of a Border Collie and transfer that to another use. Golf courses, which have not always welcomed dogs, are now welcoming specially trained dogs to rid the greens of a huge problem.

A Big Thanks to Paul and His Furry Team!

We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Paul and his loyal team of canine helpers for their outstanding efforts this season in keeping our course goose-free. Their dedication and impact on course conditions, ensuring cleaner fairways, greens, and an even more enjoyable experience for all members.

The presence of Paul and the dogs has brought a unique and refreshing energy to the course. Their hard work has not only helped with maintenance but has also added a special charm that our members have come to love. Our staff love seeing the dogs and they have become a part of our Oakfield family.

Thank you, Paul, and a special thanks to the dogs for their commitment to Oakfield. We look forward to seeing them around next season!
